The challenge

Optimization and improvement of processes is based on control and knowledge

Currently, the biological processes that take place in waste treatment plants (WTP) normally occur spontaneously, with minimal technological control and with no biotechnological control, which generates multiple unknowns in the state of science and on which the project intends to give some answer.

One of the main enigmas to be solved and on which the optimization and improvement of the processes must be based, is based on the control and knowledge of the populations of microorganisms involved in it.

The solution

Model microbial processes

The general objective is to design and develop a new small-scale pilot anaerobic digester to identify and analyze the populations of intervening microorganisms and model the microbial processes that take place in each of the stages of biomethanization, thus achieving a biotechnological control up to now non-existent in this field.

Innovations / improvements

Optimization of the anaerobic digestion process , with the aim of:

  • Increase the biogas production flow and its quality
  • Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and decrease its biological and chemical reactivity

Thanks to the development of the project, VSM will be able to offer more efficient services with the guarantee of obtaining higher recovery percentages, promoting the circular economy of the processes and completing the recovery cycle of the by-products obtained in the WTP.

This project has been funded by THE CENTER FOR INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT (CDTI)
